If you want to be healthy, both physically and mentally, exercise and physical activity are extremely important. On the NHS website, exercise is described as “the miracle cure we have all been waiting for” so you know it has got to be good.

But why is it so good for us?

How it helps our physical health

Exercise and physical activity improves our brain health, improving our thinking ability and reducing feelings of anxiety.

It reduces the risk of disease such as cardiovascular disease by lowering your blood pressure and improving your cholesterol levels. It will also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is the term used when you have a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. People begin to see improvements by simply beginning to do small amounts of moderate exercise such as going for a 30 minute walk, showing how quickly any form of physical activity can help you become more healthy.

Being physical even decreases your risk of developing certain types of cancer. There is strong evidence that physical activity can lower the risk of you developing bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and several other types. It is believed that physical activity lowers your chance of developing certain cancers because it reduces inflammation, lowers sex hormone levels, prevents high levels of insulin and helps to prevent obesity.

And if this wasn’t enough, regular exercise and physical activity also strengthens your bones and muscles which becomes increasingly important as you get older.

What about your mental health?

Exercise is obviously not an alternative to speaking to your doctor or with a therapist if you are really struggling with your mental health but exercising and taking part in physical activity is a great way to aid your mental health.

Exercise has been shown to help your mental health as it helps to alleviate stress, anxiety and tension. It is a natural energy boost which leads you to feeling more motivated, focused and creates a sense of achievement which in turn helps our self esteem.

How much exercise should we be doing?

Adults should be aiming to do some form of physical activity every day or alternatively do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercises over the course of a week. This works out at around 30 minutes, 5 times a week. Moderate intensity exercise is things such as brisk walking, cycling, dancing etc.

When it comes to vigorous activity, this includes physical activities such as running, swimming, cycling fast or uphill, taking part in sports such as football, netball or hockey etc.  In general, 75 minutes of vigorous exercise will give similar results to 150 minutes of moderate exercise. This works out at 15 minutes, 5 times a week.

Now we come to very vigorous exercise. Very vigorous exercises are short bursts of maximum effort broken up with rests, often known as HIIT workouts. Examples of these types of exercises include lifting heavy weights, circuit training, sprinting uphill and spinning class. It is recommended that you do 75 minutes each week which works out at 15 minutes, 5 times per week.

It is important that you take your time to build up from moderate to vigorous/very vigorous. A great way to do this is by doing something like Couch to 5K

Finding the time

As you can see, doing exercise and physical activity which is truly going to help you to become more healthy takes a consistent amount of time, every single week. And you will also have to factor in warming up, stretching afterwards and showering.

It is very easy to fall into a pattern of excuses about why we can’t do it and, very often, the excuse we use is we don’t have the time. Of course, many of us do have busy lives due to work, looking after our children and dealing with household matters. After you finish work or have gotten the kids to school, it can be hard to get yourself to the gym to workout.

But, what if the gym was in your home?

Having a home gym would give you a high level of convenience and would allow you to work out when it is best for you. It will also mean you will never have to wait to use equipment.

And with so many garages, spare rooms and lofts that are just dumping grounds for items that no one in the house really wants anymore, you could easily find the perfect location for your home gym.

To make it so it is a clutter free space ready for your treadmill and weights, you will need some help and that’s where our storage units Brentwood come in.

Declutter with ease with our storage units in Brentwood

Decluttering can feel like a huge task but it will be worth it when you make space for your home gym. A great way to go about it is to get some boxes and mark them Keep, Throw Away, Give Away, Sell and Storage.

And you’ve guessed it – anything that goes into the boxes marked storage can come to our storage units Brentwood

They will also be items that you aren’t sure about. Many people who are very serious about decluttering will tell you that this is a sign you don’t really want/need that item so just get rid of it! But, if you want to take your time to go through these sorts of items, bring them to one of our units and you can decide at your own pace and time. Also, having the items out of your house may help you to realise that you really don’t want/need them.

Fully protected with our storage units Brentwood
