Within this article we are going to discuss how to store a mattress, taking you through each step.

Step 1: Cleaning Your Mattress Before Storage

As with anything being placed into storage, it is really important that you clean your mattress before it goes into storage. This will prevent mould and mildew from growing and it will stop pests from being attracted to it.

In order to give your mattress a good clean, you will first want to check your mattress specific care instructions to make sure our advice is okay for you mattress.

If it is, you will want to start by brushing your mattress with a soft brush to remove any dust. Next, you will want to get a bowl of soapy, luke warm water and gently dab the mattress, paying particular attention to any stains. You do not want to scrub at the mattress as this can cause damage.

After it is cleaned, you will want to leave it to air dry.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Storage Location

Next, you will want to store your mattress in the right kind of location. It is a good idea to use a climate controlled storage unit because it eliminates the need for it to take up space in your home and it will protect your mattress. Mattress needs to be stored in a cool room where the temperature does not fluctuate, staying at around 18 to 19 degrees celsius and it needs to be kept away from dampness.

Basements, garages and lofts are all notoriously for temperature fluctuations and can be extremely damp. Dampness will cause mould and fungus to grow and your mattress will be ruined. Self storage is a much better option.

Step 3: Proper Mattress Packing Techniques

When it comes to packing your mattress, you will want to use a proper mattress cover. These are made from breathable, thin plastic and will protect your mattress from dust and bacteria.

You will want to avoid anything too thick and too heavy as this will trap in moisture making it an excellent breeding ground for mould.

Step 4: Correct Positioning and Storing of Your Mattress

Once you have your mattress cleaned, covered and your storage location picked, you will want to store your mattress in the correct position.

It is best to store your mattress flat. Storing your mattress vertically, sideways, or upright, especially for a long period of time, as it can shift its inner workings and make it lopsided over time. This especially applies to memory foam mattresses. It should lay flat with nothing on top; even soft items can eventually dent it.

Step 5: Regular Check-ups on Your Stored Mattress

Once it is in storage, you will want to make periodic checks to make sure that it is okay and so you can spot any issues early.

Once you are ready to remove your mattress from storage, once you get it home, you will want to air it out for a few hours before adding bedding. You could also sprinkle on some baking soda, leave it for a few hours and then hoover it off. This will remove any lingering odours left by the mattress cover.
