Storage For Travellers: The Role of Storage in Nomadic Living

The worldwide pandemic that we all faced not long ago has made everlasting changes to the way we live and work. Many more people now work from home and it has been estimated that in some countries such as the USA, by 2025, an even larger percentage of the workforce will be working from home.

Although this change was first thrust upon many people during the lockdown, many of us quickly found that working from home gave us so much more time to spend with our families and to do the things that bring us joy.

Working from home also brings with it a large amount of freedom and many of us are taking advantage of this and becoming digital nomads. A digital nomad is someone who works remotely using technology and the internet whilst travelling. It is not surprising that more people are choosing this lifestyle because If you already work from home and you only need a laptop and a WI-FI connection, it is extremely easy and so much fun!

There are no rules when it comes to deciding to live a nomadic lifestyle. Whilst some people commit to travelling the world with just a van and a backpack, others go travelling a few times a year whilst retaining a home base. Whichever option you decide to go with, finding a safe space to keep your belongings will be paramount. Finding storage for travellers will allow you to travel and immerse yourself in the culture of each place without having to worry about whether your belongings are safe.

The Evolution of Nomadic Living

A modern nomadic lifestyle is very similar to the nomadic lifestyle of old in that people are still working whilst travelling around from place to place. The difference is that you used to have to find work in each new place but with the rise in technology more and more people are able to do a variety of work.

The rise in more people adopting the nomadic lifestyle has led to changes in how some people do it. Some people keep a home base but travel multiple times throughout the year. This is leading to more and more travellers needing storage solutions as they need somewhere to keep all their belongings whilst they are away.

Keeping your belongings in a secure and accessible storage facility will allow you to go off on your travels with complete peace of mind that your belongings will be kept safe and secure ready for when you return.

The Benefits of Self Securing Storage for Travellers & Digital Nomads

There are many benefits to self storage for travellers and those who have decided to try out the digital nomad life.

Peace of Mind While Travelling

Using storage for travellers will allow you to have complete peace of mind whilst travelling as you will know that all your belongings are being kept clean, dry and are fully protected via intruder alarms, smoke detectors, fire detectors and 24/7 CCTV.

Flexible Plans for Intermittent Returns

Flexibility is very important in a nomadic lifestyle. Having freedom and flexibility is the whole point of adopting this type of lifestyle so it is important to find storage that is also flexible.

With our storage for travellers, we offer flexible rental plans which allow you to leave your units between your trips. If you want to keep your unit but want to downsize for a period of time, our flexible rental agreements will also make this happen. You will just need to have a chat with your local store team.

Decluttering for a More Efficient Trip

Using storage for travellers will allow you to have a more efficient trip as you will only need to take the things you need. You can store the rest in a storage unit where it will be kept safe and secure.

Tips for Nomads Considering Storage Solutions

When you begin to consider your storage solutions it is important that you take some factors into consideration before signing any rental agreements and committing to a unit.

Assessing Your Needs

Before you sign on the dotted line, you must assess how much space you actually require.

Will you be storing a large amount of furniture? The entire contents of your home? Or just a few boxes?

Next, you will need to think about when and how often you will need to access your storage.

The answer to these questions will allow you to find the storage facility that has the right sized unit, is in the right location and has the accessibility that you require.

Preparing Your Items for Long-Term Storage

Once you have found the right storage facility for your and your belongings it is important that you prepare your items for storage.

  • Any furniture must be cleaned and larger items must be disassembled. It must then be wrapped in blankets, dust sheets and/or bubble wrap. Depending on the type of furniture you have, you may also want to consider furniture pads and corner protectors.
  • Soft furnishings such as pillows and mattresses should be cleaned and then either placed in vacuum bags or have a mattress protector placed over them.
  • Each room of your house should be packed one at a time so you have all the items from that room together. Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap.
  • Do not overfill or underfill boxes. Overfilling will lead to items getting squashed, underfilling will lead to items moving around in the box. Both could lead to items being broken.
  • Use bubble wrap and packing peanuts in boxes for added protection.
  • Label every single box clearly. Put which room it is from and the items that are in it.
  • When it comes to placing it within your unit, place large pieces of furniture and your mattress up against the wall. With the boxes, make sure that the heavier ones go on the bottom.
