Moving to Newbury? Here’s 5 Things You Need to Know

Newbury is a beautiful, vibrant market town, most famous for being the home of Newbury Racecourse. If you are moving to Newbury, you will quickly find that this wonderful town has much more on offer.

There is a unique blend of historical richness, coming from it being the home of Donnington Castle and Highclere Castle (If you are a Downton Abbey fan, the latter is a must-see!), mixed with many modern conveniences.

If you are moving to Newbury, it is important to have a knowledge and understanding of the local community as this will allow you to have a smooth transition into your new home.

Embrace the Rich History of Newbury

Newbury’s history dates back to the 11th Century when it was first recorded as a town which held the right to hold a fair and a market. The manor of Newbury belonged to a French Knight, Emulph de Hesdin after it was given to him by William the Conqueror in 1080.

Donnington Castle, a historical landmark in Newbury, was built around 1336 by Sir Richard Adderbury.

In the late 15th Century, Newbury came to prominence for the manufacturing of high-quality cloth. It was not until the 20th Century that it became the place synonymous with horse racing when Newbury Racecourse was built.

If you would like to delve into the history of Newbury, the West Berkshire Museum is the place you need to go.

Navigate the Newbury Housing Market

With its scenic countryside and excellent links to London, there are many people considering moving to Newbury. There are many areas which are sought after within Newbury including Highclere, Burghclere and Compton.

In Highclere, houses sell for an average of £937,000 so it is not a cheap area to move to but it is a picturesque area and, even if you don’t buy within this area, it is a must visit if you are a fan of Downton Abbey as it is the home to Highclere Castle, where some of the television series was filmed.

Compton is a cheaper area with the average house price being around £476,572. Like Highclere, it is a very beautiful village and it is located to the north of Newbury town centre.

Burghclere’s house prices sit in the middle, averaging at £640,571. Burghclere is south of Newbury town centre and it is another beautiful village. Burghclere also has its own claim to fame, with it being the home for the rabbits in the book, Watership Down.

To buy within Newbury itself, you would be looking at paying an average of £436,136
