Brentwood is a suburban town in Essex with a rich history but also a great deal of modern appeal, having become a popular tourist destination after being featured on The Only Way is Essex. Close to London, it is a town with a great deal on offer but is Brentwood a nice place to live?

1. Rich Historical Heritage

Brentwood’s earliest settlers were the Saxons. Before this, Brentwood, and most of Essex, was covered by the Great Forest. Now known as Epping Forest, parts of this ancient woodland still remain. 

Within Brentwood itself, there are many places of historical interest. First, there is Brentwood Cathedral. It began its life as a small parish church, built in Gothic Revival style in 1861. Although still a small church, it was raised to cathedral status in 1917 and then, between 1989 and 1991, the church was enlarged in Italianate Classical style. Now, Brentwood Cathedral is a Grade II listed building with a bold marriage between these two architectural styles, and it serves as the central place of worship for Catholics in Essex and East London. 

Another place that will make Brentwood a wonderful place to move for history lovers is Weald Country Place. Weald Country Parks is 700 years old and stretches over 500 acres. Within its acreage, it has a deer park, beautiful places to walk and picnic, a children’s play area and the Stick Man Sculpture Trail. This beautiful park has a rich history but it also plays a huge role in modern day Brentwood, giving its residents a place to enjoy the natural world and for their children to play. 

2. Thriving Local Economy and Proximity to London

Brentwood offers a great deal of career opportunities both within the town itself but also from its close proximity to London. The addition of the Brentwood railway in the mid 19th Century improved connectivity to the capital, making it the perfect place to live whilst having your job be in London. You can now get to London in as little as 35 minutes, making Brentwood an excellent place to commute from. 

Brentwood itself also has a growing local economy with the council laying down plans to bring more housing and jobs to the area in the next 15 years. 

3. Outstanding Natural Beauty

Brentwood is surrounded by pieces of outstanding natural beauty. We have already mentioned Weald Country Park but Brentwood is a town with many other places to explore. 

There is Thorndon Country Park which allows you to be thoroughly immersed in nature and local wildlife. There are colourful woodlands, birds, open parkland, fishing and the Gruffalo Trail. It is the perfect place to visit for nature lovers, dog walkers and families. 

The King George Playing Fields are also an excellent place to visit for families. They are the perfect place to take the children to play,  relax with a family picnic or have a kick around with a football.

One of the biggest events was Brentwood Festival, a music festival held every July until 2020. Although it has not happened for a few years now, there is always hope that this wonderful festival will make a comeback so definitely one to keep your eyes peeled for, if you do decide to move to the area.
