Moving to a new home is exciting. It might be that you are moving into your dream home, your first home or you are simply excited about this new adventure. It is a truly exciting time.

Unfortunately, a house move does also bring a great deal of stress. In a survey conducted by Legal & General, 57% of people surveyed viewed moving house as the most stressful thing you do as an adult, beating out having children or getting divorced.

There are ways to alleviate some of the stress and, within this article, we are going to take you through our top five tips on how to get ahead with your move in the most stress-free way possible and how our storage will help.

Declutter Before Your Move

Before you even put your home on the market, have a thorough declutter. Make sure to leave yourself plenty of time so you can do it properly but also so you can do it in a slow and sensible way that doesn’t leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Decluttering is best done one room at a time and you will have to be quite ruthless.

Really consider each item – When was the last time you used it? Do you really want it in your new home? Anything that isn’t a very definite ‘Yes! I need this” give away, throw away or, if you have a lot of items, consider doing a car boot sale.

If even the idea of decluttering makes you feel stressed, you could consider bringing the items you aren’t sure you want any more to us at our Mitcham store. We will store them for you and you can then go through it all at your own pace.

Consider All Your Removal Options

You have options when it comes to who does the actual moving of all your items from your old house to your new one.

Option one is you do it yourself. This could work out cheaper for you but it is a large task to take on.

Option two is that you hire a professional removal service like VP Removals. They will come in and load everything into the van and then unload it when you get to your new home. Often they will have the option that they will come and pack items for you too which will take away another layer of stress.

Pack Everything Nice And Early

If you choose to pack up everything yourself, start packing as early as you possibly can.

Packing up all your worldly possessions is a big job and the earlier you get started, the less stressful it will be.

This includes dismantling any furniture that you can live without for a little while as early as possible. You may all have to camp out in one room in sleeping bags for a few days but it will be so worth it when you aren’t having to run around still packing on the day of the move.

Leave Essentials Until Last

Make sure to pack all your essentials into one or two boxes and load them onto the van last so they are the first things you can get out.

This means items such as your kettle, mugs, teabags, coffee, snacks, phone chargers, change of clothes, pyjamas, bedding, towels, some cleaning products etc.

Along with this, keep hold of all your important documents such as your passport etc. Don’t pack these items away.

Take Breaks

And once you have gotten out all your essentials make sure to use them! It is so easy to feel like you have to get everything unpacked as quickly as possible, but take your time and make sure to have breaks.

Take the time to sit down and eat something and have a cup of tea.

Most importantly, take it easy on yourself. You truly do not have to have your new house perfect straight away. Take your time and decide what needs doing first, if any work needs doing or if you just want to redecorate.
