Hiking Trip: Get Ready With Storage Mitcham

Deciding to head out on a long distance hiking trip takes planning and courage. Here, we will talk about how our storage Mitcham will help.

If you wander around any book store, you will come across a multitude of memoirs, all of which speak of the author heading off on a long distance, awe-inspiring walk.

You have Cheryl Strayed who walked the entire 1,100 Pacific Crest Trail alone, which became the basis of her book Wild. Raynor Winn writes about walking the South West Coast Path, after losing her home and as her husband, Moth, is diagnosed with a degenerative illness, in her memoir, The Salt Path. In How To Be Alone, Nicole Antoinette, writes about walking all 800 miles of the Arizona Trail, in blistering heat in the daytime and trying (and often failing) to sleep in freezing nighttime temperatures.

For some, these epic adventures are a wonderful read but that is all. Others are filled with a need to head off on their own adventure. If you are the latter, our storage Mitcham is here to help.

Within this article, we will look at how to get started on your hiking adventure and how storage Mitcham will help.

Is Walking Good For You?

Walking is indeed good for you. Often overlooked for running or heading to the gym, walking is an excellent form of exercise. A brisk walk is good for your stamina, helps with burning calories and makes your heart healthier.

As with all types of exercise, walking is also good for our mental health. Heading out on a walk, in the fresh air, helps us feel more positive, increases our mental alertness and our energy.

So, yes, walking is good for you.

Getting Started With Walking

Within many of the books we mentioned in our introduction, the authors set out on long walks having not really done one before. It all worked out pretty well for them but it is not really something a medical professional would recommend.

It is important that you start slowly, particularly if you aren’t currently very active. You will want to increase your walking distance gradually and try to incorporate walking into your life in a way it will become a habit. This could be starting to walk to work, walking to the shops or using the stairs instead of the lift.

Take your time and don’t worry about what others are doing. This is your life and you should live it at your own pace.

Ready For The Big Hiking Adventure?

If you are already an active person and you are ready for a big hiking adventure, you will still need to be prepared. Within this section, we will look at how you can be prepared and how our storage Mitcham will help.

Have The Right Gear

It is really important to have the right gear for your long-distance hike but it should be the right gear for you. Don’t get too worked up on what everyone else has or about having the latest, lightest gear. You need to work to your needs and to your budget.

By all means, watch Youtube videos and read blogs about gear so you have an idea of what you will need but don’t get wrapped up in comparison.

Good Footwear Is Key

Making sure you have the right footwear is key to you having a successful, enjoyable hike. Again, you can research what others like to wear but, ultimately, it will be a personal choice as to what works best for you.

Go to walking shops and try on a selection, making sure to walk around in them.

Food, Glorious Food

Eating a good amount of food is really important during a long-distance hike. They are light-weight meals you can take with you but, where you can, try and eat some fresh food from time to time. This could be grabbing some fruit as you pass a town or heading to a cafe or pub and having a proper meal and a well-deserved rest.

It is also really important that you eat regularly, even if you aren’t hungry. If you go too long without any food, you will begin to feel low in energy and your pace will slow.

Do Some Trial Runs

Once you have your gear and your footwear, packing it all up, get your boots on and head out on some trial runs. These are shorter distance walks that allow you to make sure that you can carry all your gear and your footwear is comfortable.

Stay Positive

Long distance hiking is hard, both physically and mentally, so it is important that you try and stay positive.

Many hikers who do this regularly, such as Mark Webb from Wild Walking UK, find that looking for the small positives in every situation really helps.

Do It Your Way

Yes, you can head off like Cheryl, Raynor, Nicole and Mark for days or months at a time, walking many miles every day.

Or, if this doesn’t work for you, you could walk a trail on the weekends, over an extended period of time. Or you could do one of The Conqueror Challenge’s, where you have the challenge of walking a set amount of miles but you can do wherever you want and take as long as you want.

If you do want to do it, in one long hike, you may need to find somewhere to store you belongings. Storage Mitcham will help.
