With self storage availability increasing so much over recent years, there is now more storage choice than ever. In fact, the 2024 Self Storage Industry Report put the increase at just over 8%.
No wonder finding storage can feel like a minefield. With so much choice, how are you supposed to narrow down your options and make the right decision?
Here are some things to think about that will help you find the best self storage in Watford.

Location and Opening Hours
Consider how often you see yourself visiting the self storage facility. If you plan to visit often, choose a location you can get to easily.
As well as how often, think about when you’ll need to visit: during regular business hours, or after? Do you want staff on hand or are you happy with an unmanned facility?
Our Watford storage facility is just an 8-minute drive from the centre of Watford. It makes checking up on your belongings, or adding and removing items, easy for those living locally or in the surrounding areas.
Choosing the Right Size
Make a list of the main items you’ll store so you can get a clear picture of how much space they take up. Larger appliances or furnishings need more space than several smaller boxes or suitcases of clothing or spare bedding. If it’s feasible, you could try piling everything together then measuring how much space everything takes up.
In our Watford Self Storage facility, we have a wide range of room sizes from just 10 sq ft up to 500 sq ft. You can also combine units if you need even more space. We’re confident we can find the exact space you need.
If you find it challenging to visualise storage room sizes and how they relate to your items, you’re not alone. Many people do. A well-run facility won’t mind you asking for advice. They’ll help you choose a unit size that’s perfect for your needs.
What Will Fit in a Storage Space
To help you picture the sizes, here are some useful guides:
- A 10 sq ft unit is small and fills up quickly when you start adding household items. Think in terms of small tables or cabinets, dining chairs, suitcases, or office equipment such as a desk, printer, monitor – but not all together. You could also fit a bike and some moving boxes or storage tubs. If you want to fit all of these in, you may need a larger space.
- 50 sq ft is a medium size. Think in terms of a large transit van and you won’t go far wrong. It will hold a good range of everyday items, from sofas and chairs to your double mattress and bed frame, along with your main large appliances.
- 100 sq ft is about the size of a typical single garage, so it holds a good number of household furnishings along with plenty of packing boxes.
You can always visit the facility you prefer and ask if it’s possible to see various units if you’re finding it difficult to picture how much space your items will need.
Ask About Security
When you’re choosing self storage, top-level security should be a priority. You want CCTV surveillance, pin-code access and alarms on the individual units. Don’t be afraid to ask about overnight security as well as during office hours.
You’ll find all those security measures in our storage facilities, with individual alarms plus smoke and fire detectors in each storage unit. Our 24/7 CCTV surveillance covers the entire facility.
Other Questions You May Have
While it’s possible to make changes to your original rental agreement, it’s much more convenient if you can make the best choice to start with.
Here are some typical questions you might want answers to:
- Are there additional fees, such as security deposits or admin charges?
- Are there any discounts available, or refunds at any time?
- Are there any restrictions on when I can access my storage unit?
- Do you have any packing tips or advice?
- Can you accept deliveries for me? (mainly business users)
- Are there restrictions on the type of items I can store?
- Do you have trolleys to help with unloading?
- Are there lifts? (if some storage rooms are upstairs)
Ask as many questions as you can think of to help you reach an informed decision.
Look for Flexible Contracts
Look closely at the rental contract to make sure you can change to a different sized unit if you need to. Reputable companies won’t tie you into a contract that means you’re paying for space you don’t need. You should be able to make changes at short notice, whether you’re up- or down-sizing.
We offer flexible contracts because we know things can quickly change even with the best-laid plans. Just have a chat with our team, even if you need to leave earlier than the term stated on your rental agreement, we only need a short period of notice.
Look at Reviews
Have a look at what other customers at your chosen facility have to say about their experience. Google reviews are the easiest place to start, and look at how a company responds to problems, not just the star rating. All of our store teams are highly rated, with staff always willing to help, solve issues, or answer any questions that arise.
We take pride in providing the best self storage in Watford, working hard to make sure your storage experience is as good as it can possibly be. We treat every customer as an individual, and go the extra mile to ensure your belongings are safe and secure.
