Within this article we are going to talk you through the essential items you need for efficient self storage packing.

Why Proper Packing Matters for Self-Storage

Proper packing for self storage is important because it will help to protect your item, make efficient use of the storage space and will help you to easily access items that you might need before your rental agreement expires.

Essential Packing Supplies for Self-Storage

Sturdy Boxes

One of the most important items for excellent self storage packing is good boxes. It is very easy to just try and make do with boxes you get from a delivery or free from a local supermarket and these are fine for short-trips. But, even during a short-trip, you must make sure that the boxes are in good condition, otherwise you run the risk of your items being damaged.

For efficient self storage packing you will want to pick strong, multiwalled boxes, like the ones available in our Box Shop. These will protect your belongings and will be stackable allowing you to use your storage space efficiently.

Packing Tape & Dispensers

Strong packing tape is also very important as this will keep your boxes shut, securely, which will help to keep your belongings safe.

A tape dispenser is also an essential item to have when packing for self storage because it will make packing much more convenient.

Bubble Wrap & Peanuts

When it comes to dealing with fragile items, it can be hard to know whether to go for bubble wrap or packing peanuts.

Bubble wrap is designed to cushion fragile items to prevent them from breaking and it is great for using on items that have breakable parts or surfaces that could be easily scratched. It is perfect for wrapping around fragile items.

Packing peanuts are designed to fill up space within boxes which, again, provide a cushion for fragile items whilst also providing some shock absorption.

It is likely that you will need both in order to efficiently pack your belongings for self storage but which will work best is entirely dependent on what you will be storing.

Plastic Wrap

Plastic wrap is a stretchy, plastic film which is used to bind items together. It is commonly used on furniture with drawers in order to keep the drawers in place. Also, it can be used as an extra layer of protection for artworks and soft furnishings.

It can be tricky to use but it will be worth it when your belongings are safe in their storage unit.

Labelling Materials

Another important item is labels. Labels are important because they will allow you to detail on each box what is inside. This will help with organisation and help you to easily find any items you need whilst they are stored in self storage.

If you are storing any fragile items, make sure to label them ‘FRAGILE’. This will help everyone involved with moving the boxes see that they need to be extra careful with this box.

Furniture Covers

Furniture covers are exactly what it says on the tin – they are covers for your furniture. They are essential for your self storage packing because they will keep your furniture clean and protect it from insects and/or vermin.

They will also help to protect it when it is being moved from your home and into the self storage unit.

Packing Tips for Efficient Use of Space

In order to make the most of your storage space, you should first make an inventory of everything that you are storing and then plan the layout of where everything will be stored in your unit.

Once you are in your unit, depending on what you are storing, you may want to add shelving. This will help to keep boxes very organised.

If you are also storing large pieces of furniture, you will want to dismantle these items and place them against the walls, under furniture covers.

If you are just stacking the boxes on top of each other, make sure the heavy boxes go on the bottom.

Most importantly, take your time! Taking your time will lead to less issues and stress. And make sure to take breaks and if you need help, ask for it. This can be from family, friends or from the team members at the self storage facility. They will be happy to help you.
