Within this article we are going to discuss why clutter is bad for us, how to declutter and how a storage unit Sidcup will be a great help.

Why Is Clutter Bad For Us?

Clutter is bad for us because it has a detrimental effect on both our physical and mental health.

From a physical health standpoint, clutter collects dust and this can cause allergies or asthma to become much worse. It can also prevent us from moving around or exercising within our homes which can cause our physical health to worsen.

From a mental health standpoint, it can cause stress, anxiety and depression. It causes stress because it can make our homes very hard to relax in. Clutter can also contribute to household chaos, which is associated with worse parenting practices, negative emotions, and stress. It can also cause us to become more isolated and lonely because we are embarrassed to invite people into our homes.

And it is not just within homes that it is an issue. Clutter is also known to affect focus and productivity so a cluttered workspace is not conducive to a good work environment.

How To Declutter

So, clutter is not good for us but it is also easy to sort through and eliminate from your home by the simple art of decluttering. Within this section we are going to talk you through some tips on how to declutter so it is a simple, easy process.

Start Small And Slow

A big reason that decluttering can feel overwhelming is that we all have the habit of going at it, guns-a-blazing. It is much better to start off slowly, doing small areas at a time. This can mean one room at a time or could just be a drawer in a certain room.

Even minimalist advice starting small, with them feeling a good way to start is just doing 5 minutes per day until you get into the swing of things.

Find A Method That Works For You

There are a variety of decluttering methods out there and it is all about finding the method that works for you.

There is The Four Box Method in which you get four boxes and label them Keep, Throw Away, Give Away and storage. And then you go through your belongings placing each item in the correct box.

There is The KonMari Method, invented by Marie Kondo, in which you hold each of your items and decide if they bring you joy. Any items that don’t bring you joy should be removed from your home.

Then there is The Packing Party Method which is how The Minimalists, Ryan Nicodemus, became a minimalist. In this method, you pack away everything you own, as if you are moving house. And then you spend the next few weeks unpacking only what you really need. Things like your toothbrush, bed sheets, work clothes etc.

If one of these methods sounds good to you, give it a try. This will start you on your way to a decluttered home.

Be Honest With Yourself

Once you have found a method that works for you, you now have to be honest with yourself. And be pretty ruthless.

When was the last time you wore that dress? Used the slow cooker? Watched that DVD? Read that book?

It is really easy to get in the habit of thinking “But what if I want to use it at some point?” Think about the last time you actually used it and be honest with yourself. If it’s been over a year, it’s unlikely that you will ever use it again.

Ask For Help

If your home or workspace has a lot of clutter, don’t be afraid to ask for help. We all need it from time to time and having someone there to help you could make the experience much more enjoyable.
