Bedford is a beautiful market town in Bedfordshire. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages and the Anglo Saxon King, Offa of Mercia, was buried in the town in 796 so it is a town steeped in history.

Bedford is a town that offers a mix of historical sites, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences. Here are our top 5 things to do in Bedford.

1. Explore the Bedford Park

If you love nature and green spaces, then Bedford Park is a must visit. It is a Grade II listed English Heritage Victorian park which is perfect for a relaxing day out.

Whether you enjoy walking, jogging, or simply enjoying nature, it provides a beautiful setting. It has an outdoor gym, play areas and a cafe so there is something for everyone.

2. Take a Walk along the River Great Ouse

Sticking with nature, the River Great Ouse runs through Bedford, and walking along its scenic banks is one of the most popular activities in town.

There are also boat trips to be enjoyed or you can go kayaking for a more adventurous way to appreciate the picturesque views.

3. Visit St. Paul’s Church

If you are a history buff, St Paul’s Church is something that you must visit. This beautiful church is well-known for its stunning stained-glass windows and impressive interior.

There is some evidence that suggests that the Church was founded by King Offa Of Mercia, who we mentioned earlier, making this a church with a very rich history. Perfect place to visit if you love history and architecture.

4. Take In Some Culture The Higgins Bedford

A lovely spot for art and culture lovers, The Higgins Bedford is an art gallery and museum with an excellent collection of local artwork, sculptures, and historical artefacts.

The building itself is an amazing example of Victorian architecture, and there are often special exhibits and events. It is open 11am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday and then Sundays, 2pm to 5pm.

5. Walk Along The Bedford Art Trial

If you love art of all kinds, from paintings to books, theatre to music, the Bedford Art Trail will be a great thing to take part in.

It will take you around, at your own pace, all the museums, galleries, theatres, music venues, community art venues and bookshops. It is completely free to do, you just need the map
