Everyone who has children wants to instill a love of reading within their children. A great way to do this is to make books a natural part of your home and reading regularly to your children will be a great help.

But, these tiny humans often end up with a lot of things – toys, books, clothes etc. – and you need to find a way to keep it all tidy and organised.

Within this article, we are focussing on kids book storage ideas and how to keep their books tidy so they are ready for the next reading session.

How To Organise Your Kid’s Books

Making sure your kid’s books are kept tidy and organised will ensure that the books are kept in good condition, ready for you to read to your child or, as they get older, for your child to read themselves.

But, you need to have some good kids book storage ideas in place. Within this section, we will look at some of the best ways for organising your kid’s books.

Have A Declutter

This is quite often our first port of call but that is because decluttering comes hand in hand with organisation. Decluttering your children’s books can be hard as they often hold a great deal of emotional significance, for your child and for you. But, you cannot keep everything and the memories of reading that particular book is what holds the significance, not the book itself.

When it comes to decluttering your child’s books collection, it is perfectly okay to take your time with it. It can be hard. A great way to start is to gather all the books together and group them into categories. This will help you to see the books that your child has outgrown or no longer enjoys.

If the books are still in good condition, take them to charity shops or you could see if your local library would like them.

Organise By Season

Organising your child’s books by season is a great way to stop the books from getting boring for your child. It also stops your child from getting overwhelmed by too many choices.

Along with this, it will also help you to keep all the books organised because only the ones that are for the certain seasons will be out and on the shelves.

It is very simple to organise your kid’s books by season. Firstly you should gather them all together and first separate the books that obviously fit a specific season. For example, a book about Christmas would go into your Winter pile.

Next, you want to sort through all the other harder to categorise books. There are simple ways to categorise these books. For example, a book about camping could go in the Summer pile , a book about rabbits into the Spring pile and so on.

Put the books into four separate boxes – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – and store the seasons you don’t need somewhere safe. Place the books that are right for the current season on shelving or bookcases.

Utilise Slim Bookcases

This brings us nicely to the types of bookcases that will be good for your kid’s books. If your child is still quite young they may only have picture books. If this is the case, a slim bookcase would be an excellent way to store their books.

Not only will it be a great way to keep your kid’s books organised but it will also keep them visible, encouraging your child to bring them out to look at themselves or to ask you to read to them.

Repurpose A Storage Trolley

Storage trolleys, typically found in bathrooms or kitchens, can also serve as excellent book storage for children. They are best suited for smaller books, A5 size or less, to prevent them from falling out.

Due to their height and wheels, these trolleys should be kept in supervised areas like the living room to avoid potential tipping. However, their utility extends beyond childhood, making them a lasting storage solution even after picture books are outgrown.

Make The Most Of Underbed Storage

If your child has a divan bed base with drawers, you can make use of the drawer space by storing books with their spines facing upwards. Your child can easily pull open their drawers and choose what they want to read next.

Kids Book Storage Ideas For Long Term Storage

Sometimes you need to place your kid’s books into long term storage. This could be during a house move, home renovations or because you want to save them to pass onto another child.

Long term storage of books is different to regular storage as you need to make sure the books are stored in such a way that they will stay safe from damage. Within this section, we will have a look at kids book storage ideas for long term storage.

Keep Your Books Clean

It is important that you keep your books clean at all times but if you are placing your books into long term storage, your books being clean of dust, pests and food debris is even more important.

You should wipe the outside of your books with a soft cloth and then use a soft paintbrush to remove dust and any food debris from the inside of your book.

Keep Air Flowing Around Your Books

Whether you are storing your books, it is a good idea to keep them in a place that has a good amount of air flow. This helps to prevent mould and mildew from growing.

Before placing your books into long term storage, you should air them all out, particularly any that are old, damp and/or musty. If you find any that already show signs of mould or mildew, you should keep this one out of storage.

Prepare Your Books For Storage

Once they are cleaned and aired out, you should prepare your books for storage by wrapping them in archive paper. Archive paper is acid-free and it will ensure your kid’s books remain in good condition. Bubble wrap is another good material for book wrapping, however, it has been known to leave polka dot patterns on the cover of books if wrapped too tightly.

Use The Right Containers

Along with archive paper, you should also use archival boxes. Cardboard boxes are fine for short term storage but should be avoided for long term storage because they don’t offer a great deal of protection.

Utilise Self Storage

If you are having to store your kid’s books because of a house move or home renovations, you will need to find somewhere to store them all. Self storage is an excellent option as it will give you a secure place to store your kid’s books along with all your other belongings.
