Decluttering is something we all need to do. But, it can be a hard, overwhelming task. Our storage facilities in Woking will help. Read on to find out how.

Decluttering is something that we should all be doing regularly. Having homes filled with clutter is not good for us. Excessive amounts of clutter can cause us to feel stressed and anxious. It can worsen physical conditions like asthma and has an effect on our ability to focus. If it is really bad, it can damage our relationships with others as we feel ashamed to let people into our homes.

Having regular decluttering sessions is a good way to stay on top of it but, if you haven’t decluttered in a while, it can feel like a daunting task to begin. Our storage will be an excellent help.

Within this article, we will guide you through some of our top decluttering tips and let you know how our storage will help.

Getting Started With Your Decluttering

If you have a lot of clutter, it can be really hard to know where to start. Within this section, we will look at how you can get started.

Make A Plan

This is often our first piece of advice when it comes to a lot of things but that is because having a plan just makes everything easier.

In your decluttering plan, you should think about how you want to approach your decluttering. We recommend doing it a room at a time so think about what room you want to start in. And then where you want to go from there. You could draw up a timeline but be realistic. You cannot declutter a whole house in one weekend.

It could be good idea to ring up some local charity shops, like Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care, to see if they are accepting donations and if there are any items they aren’t accepting. This will allow you to be ahead of the game when it comes to the items that you no longer need but are in a good enough condition to donate.

Choose A Decluttering Method

There are many decluttering methods out there and it is a good idea to choose one that works for you.

There is The Four Box Method in which you get four boxes and label them Keep, Throw Away, Give Away and Storage. And then you go through your belongings placing each item in the correct box.

There is The KonMari Method, invented by Marie Kondo, in which you hold each of your items and decide if they bring you joy. Any items that don’t bring you joy should be given away or thrown away, depending on the condition they are in.

Then there is The Packing Party Method which is how The Minimalists, Ryan Nicodemus, became a minimalist. In this method, you pack away everything you own, as if you are moving house. And then you spend the next few weeks unpacking only what you really need. Things like your toothbrush, bed sheets, work clothes etc. All the stuff you don’t unpack is the things you don’t really need so these items can be given or thrown away.

If one of these methods sounds good to you, give it a try but don’t be afraid to try a different one if it doesn’t end up working for you. This is all about getting your home clutter-free but the method has to work for you.

Set Realistic Goals

We have already mentioned this above but it is really important that you are realistic when it comes to your decluttering and that you set a goal that reflects that.

Depending on how much clutter you have, one to two rooms a day is a realistic and perfectly reasonable goal.

If doing it one room at a time feels too overwhelming, you can start even smaller than this. You can start with five minutes of decluttering a day or doing one drawer or one cupboard at a time. This is your decluttering project and you can do it exactly how it works for you.

Ask For Help

If you need help, please ask for it. This could be from friends or family or it could be from professionals, like Woking Decluttering Service. There is no shame in needing help.
