No matter what you collect – books, vinyl records, figurines, comic books, vintage toys or anything in between – chances are, your collection means a great deal to you. It will bring you great amounts of joy which makes it really important that, when it comes to collectables storage, you get it right.

Within this article, we will guide you through collectable storage, how to get it right whether you are storing your collections within your home or within a storage unit.

Prevent Physical Damage

When it comes to storing collectables you will want to prevent physical damage. You can protect collectables by cushioning the containers you are storing them in with crumpled tissue, bubble wrap or packing peanuts.

Collectables should be boxed individually, if possible. If they have to be grouped, they should be placed in a way that they won’t come in contact with each other. Wrapping them in bubble wrap or protective wrapping will help this.

Get The Right Temperature And Humidity

As with storing many items, temperature and humidity are extremely important when it comes to collectables storage. You do not want your collectables to be stored in an area that has any type of extreme temperature, whether that be hot or cold, or any extreme levels of humidity. So, lofts and basements are not a good idea when it comes to storing collectibles.

Cool temperatures and a moderate humidity of around 50% is the general guidelines for collectables storage. You can keep track of temperature and humidity with a sensor

Restrict The Light

Light is another possible enemy to your collectables. Any damage done to your collectables will very likely be irreversible so it is really important that your collectables storage is within  a darkened area.

If you are displaying your collectables, you can get UV filtering film that you can place over your windows and fluorescent lights. You should also turn off lights when not in the room and draw curtains or blinds when you can. This will also offer some protection to your collectables.

Make Sure Your Collection Stays Clean

Before placing your collectables into storage, you need to make sure that it is all clean.  Any dust or pest left on or within your collectable could cause damage. If you are cleaning your collection with water, you will need to make sure that it is all dry too. Anything that is slightly damp could end up with mould or mildew growing on it.

Keep Handling To A Minimum

You will want to minimise handling to reduce risk of damage, no matter what your collection is made up of.

Dirt, fingerprints, oils and other contaminants can be transferred from your hands to the surface of one of your collectables. You should always wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling any of your collection. Gloves can reduce dexterity and make it difficult to handle objects safely. Always use nitrile gloves, not cotton, when handling unstable plastics.

How To Store Collectables

Collectables storage is something that must be gotten right because getting wrong could lead to irreversible damage to your precious collections. You should cushion your boxes and/or wrap your collectables up in bubble wrap to prevent damage from happening to them, particularly if they are plastic and have any fragile parts.

You should choose the right environment for your collectables storage. It should be somewhere with a cool temperature and moderate humidity, around 50%. It is also a good idea to pick a room that is dark or can be dark for the majority of the time. UV light can do irreversible damage to your collectables so make sure to keep your collection away from it.

Before placing anything into storage, you should make sure that it is all clean. This will prevent damage occurring from pests. Whether your collection is in storage or not, you should try to keep handing to a minimum as excessive handling can cause damage to your collection, even if you wear gloves.
