Many people experience the January Blues. It is thought to be due to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is a type of depression that comes and goes, depending on the season. Many people struggle in winter due to the darker and colder weather.

This mixed with January being the month that comes after the excitement and magic of Christmas can lead to it being a hard month for many people.

Within this article, we are going to offer some tips for helping to ease the January Blues and let you know how our storage Sittingbourne will help.

Tips For Easing The January Blues

Many of us find January a particular hard month. Within this section we will talk you through some of our tips for easing the January Blues.

Set Realistic Resolutions

Many of us set New Year’s Resolutions in January but most of these fall by the wayside pretty quickly. A large-scale 3-year study found that 55% of people break their resolution within a year. 11% of those surveyed lasted less than one month.

It is thought that many of us fail to stick to our resolutions because we pick drastic and unrealistic resolutions. By picking more realistic resolutions, you will find that you are more likely to succeed. Many people also find thinking of them as long-term goals or intentions, instead of new years resolutions also helps.

Get Outside When You Can

It can be really hard to find the motivation to get outside in January. It’s cold, often wet and staying warm and dry inside is much more appealing.

Having said this, try and get outside when you can. Lack of sunlight is a big factor for the January Blues and getting outside during the lighter hours will be really beneficial. Don’t beat yourself up for staying inside, in your pyjamas some days! That is allowed too.

Make Some Fun Plans

Making some fun plans is a very good way to ease the January Blues. Having something to look forward to and to get excited about will make you feel happier.

And it doesn’t have to be anything big! Just something that you find fun. You could head out on a long walk or go grab a cup of tea with a friend. Just something that will make you smile and feel better.

Find Gratitude

Something that many people find helpful for the January Blue (and year round) is having a gratitude practice. Having a gratitude practice will help you to see the positives in your life and this has been shown to boost our mood and resilience

Your gratitude practice doesn’t have to be anything fancy. You could write down five things you are grateful for each morning, in a notebook or in your phone notes. You could, before you go to sleep, lie in bed and think about three things from the past day you are grateful for. It can be a very simple, cheap practice that makes you January much happier.

Accept How You Are Feeling

Our final tip is simply to find and allow yourself some acceptance for how you are feeling. January is a hard month for many of us. It’s cold, it’s dark, it’s wet. We are all exhausted from the Christmas period because, no matter how wonderful, Christmas is a lot.

And there are actually biological reasons for why you are feeling a little low, tired and unmotivated. The lack of sunlight in winter leads to low levels of vitamin D but increases levels of melatonin so you are bound to feel more tired and less motivated. Don’t beat yourself up about it and try to be at the same level as you are in the summer. It’s winter, you are allowed to take things slower, we promise you.
