Wimbledon lies in the south-west area of London, close to Wandsworth and Tooting and its history dates back to the Iron Age. In modern day, it is known for being the location of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and for Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in London and home to The Wombles.
Over the years, Wimbledon has become an affluent and popular part of London. Within this article, we are going to discuss the many things to do in Wimbledon.
Visit the All England Tennis Club
As we are discussing Wimbledon, we must first talk about tennis and that, in turn, means we must talk about the All England Tennis Club. Home to the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, which you go to in summer, you can also visit the club year round.
All England Tennis Club was founded in 1868 as The All England Croquet Club. Its name was changed in 1877 to The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club and in 1899 to The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Now visitors can go on tours of the infamous grounds and visit the museum where they can view trophies and learn how the championship has developed since 1877. Tours of the grounds are subject to availability but the museum is open daily from 10am. Tickets for the tour and museum are £27 for adults and £17 for children. Tickets for the museum alone are £15 for adults and £10 for children. All tickets can be booked on their website.
Explore Wimbledon Common
From tennis to the home of the Wombles, a visit to Wimbledon Common is one of the top things to do in Wimbledon.
Wimbledon Common is 1,140 acres of countryside amidst the urban surroundings of Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston-upon-Thames. Much of the Commons are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, with woodland, scrubland, heathland, a mown recreation area and nine ponds. The Common is unfenced so it is open to the public 24 hours a day throughout the year but, as it is home to a wide variety of bird, animal and plant life, visitors must treat it with respect.
Many events are held on the Common such as bird song identification workshops but you are, of course, free to enjoy the Common alone by going for a walk, horse riding or even having a game of golf.
Tour the Wimbledon Windmill Museum
Next we are on to Windmills! Or the Wimbledon Windmill Museum, to be exact.
The Windmill Museum is on Wimbledon Common and is housed within a Grade II listed windmill, which was built by carpenter Charles March in 1817. Within the museum you can find out all about the windmill’s history, including its 1893 restoration.
The museum is open from the end of March to the end of October on Saturday, Sundays and bank holidays. On Saturdays, it is open 2pm to 5pm and on Sundays and bank holidays, it is open 11am to 5pm. Admission is free but donations are welcome. If you are local to Wimbledon, there are also always looking for volunteers to help with the running of the museum.
